On November 3rd and 4th, the United States and Romania held two key defence cooperation meetings-the annual Romanian-American Working Group Meetings for Bilateral Staff Discussions and the Joint Committee Meeting-organized and hosted by U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) in Stuttgart, Germany.
The events were co-chaired by Brigadier General Quaid Quadri, USEUCOM's Deputy Director for Plans, Strategy and Capabilities, and Lieutenant General Liviu Mihail Iancu, Deputy Chief of the Department for Defence Policy, Planning and International Relations.
These meetings followed the High-Level Defence Group Meeting, organized in Bucharest, on November 18th.
During the Bilateral Staff Discussions, the delegations assessed the current stage of the defence partnership and agreed to enhance cooperation in several priority areas. The delegations focused on topics related to the regional security environment, on enhancing interoperability through an increased number of training activities conducted in Romania, as well as on optimizing coordination on modernization and acquisition programs.
Both parties stressed the importance of increasing the exchange of information, capitalizing on lessons learned from operational experiences and integrating state-of-the-art technologies to enhance defence preparedness. The delegations reaffirmed their strong commitment to deterrence and defence on NATO's Eastern Flank and emphasized the strategic importance of the Black Sea region for Euro-Atlantic security.
The subsequent Joint Committee Meeting provided an opportunity to review the implementation stage the U.S.-Romania Defence Cooperation Agreement and align future goals. The talks focused on continuing development of the capabilities, infrastructure, and force posture necessary to maintain a credible and flexible allied presence in the region.
During the meetings, the Romanian delegation emphasized the essential role of the Romania-United States Strategic Partnership in protecting national and regional security in the current geopolitical context. The American representatives reiterated their constant support for the increase of Romania's defence and their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation in critical areas for transatlantic stability and resilience.
Defence cooperation between Romania and the United States continues to represent a cornerstone of our country's national security and a vital contribution to collective defence and stability in Europe and the entire Euro-Atlantic space, especially in the Black Sea strategic region.
