Street Mural Update: Finding New Ways to Express St. Petersburg's Identity

Street Mural Update: Finding New Ways to Express St. Petersburg's Identity

Sept. 10, 2025 - Due to recent changes in state and federal transportation rules, five murals that once brightened St. Petersburg's city streets have been removed. Beyond adding color and creativity, the street murals served as an expression of community, connection, and the spirit of St. Petersburg.

Which Murals were Removed?

  • The Progressive Pride Mural, Central Ave. and 25th St. N

  • The Black History Matters Mural, Ninth Ave. S near 22nd St. S

  • The Fluid Structures Mural, USF St. Petersburg campus, 6th Ave. S and 2nd St. S

  • The Common Ground Mural, Central Ave. and 5th St.

  • The Crossway Crux Mural, Childs Park, 11th Ave. S and 46th St.

What this Means

The removal of the street murals creates an opportunity to explore new forms of expression that reflect the character of St. Petersburg. City leaders are considering options that go beyond street art-such as public installations, cultural events, and community projects-that can continue to showcase creativity and highlight the values that define the city.

"St. Petersburg's story has always been one of creativity, resilience, and community spirit. While the directive to remove our street murals is disappointing, it also challenges us to think strategically about how we express who we are as a city, in more impactful and resilient ways" said Mayor Kenneth T. Welch. "I invite every resident to share ideas for how we can honor our identity and values in new ways-through art, culture, and collective action."
