Reshaping the Skyline: A Year of Heavy Lifting at the I-285/I-20 Interchange
Over the past year, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) and its construction partners have aggressively advanced reconstruction of this critical corridor from initial site preparation to building bridge foundations. Designed to rebuild one of the nation's most significant freight bottlenecks, the project has started to reshape the local landscape over the past 12 months, for safer, more efficient travel in the future.
This project is completely transforming the interchange by reconstructing system-to-system ramps, eliminating the existing left-hand exits, and modifying or replacing 19 bridges along a 6.5-mile stretch of I-20 and a 2.4-mile stretch of I-285.
Early 2025 construction was defined by extensive "clearing and grubbing"-removing trees, dense vegetation, and surface debris to establish a solid, level structural base across. Next, teams shifted to heavy excavation and installation of robust soil-retaining walls that provided the stability needed to safely excavate alongside live traffic lanes.

Progress reached a highly visible point as focus shifted to one of the most recognizable new elements: a massive, 2,700-foot-long flyover ramp that will carry westbound I-20 traffic onto southbound I-285. Contractors implemented controlled rock blasting during daylight hours to remove thick layers of native granite bedrock.
Earlier this year, the project reached an exciting new construction milestone: bridge beam setting. Cranes hoisted massive concrete beams into place for spans on the I-20 West to I-285 South flyover, and on the adjacent I-285 North to I-20 West ramp.

Engineering Innovation: The "Baseball Field" Approach to West Interchange Work Zone Safety
You may have seen this baseball-themed signage around the West Interchange project limits, but what does it mean?
Well, managing traffic and worker logistics at a major highway interchange can be a complex task, however, a fresh perspective from a young engineer on the project transformed a standard construction challenge into an innovative, highly efficient work zone logistics plan modeled after a baseball field.
The core concept of this layout is to divide the construction zone into recognizable segments named after parts of a baseball field. By replacing engineering grid coordinates with familiar baseball terminology, the project team has streamlined communication, material delivery, and daily operations.
Beyond its clever naming convention, this structured blueprint is a safety measure. By explicitly separating active work areas, delivery routes, and heavy machinery staging from live highway lanes, the plan minimizes driver confusion and eliminates unexpected merges.
Drivers navigating I-20 and I-285 benefit from predictable traffic patterns, while workers on the ground gain clearly defined boundaries that keep them safely isolated from high-speed traffic. It's a winning strategy that shows a little out-of-the-box thinking can go a long way toward building safer infrastructure.

Spring Brings Opportunity at the I-285/I-20 West Interchange
As May brings warmer weather and extended daylight to Georgia, construction activity is reaching peak momentum at the I-285/I-20 West Interchange. But major infrastructure improvements aren't the only things taking shape this month-May is also bringing a wave of new career and economic opportunities directly to the local community. With the 2026 construction season in full swing, the project team is reinforcing its commitment to a vital part of the project's mission: strengthening and investing in the local workforce.
Workforce development is a driving force behind the success of the West Interchange project. The team is actively recruiting local residents for meaningful, long-term career opportunities that go beyond seasonal jobs. As major work phases progress throughout the month, additional openings are being advertised across multiple trades, skilled labor, and project support roles.

Separate from the I-285/I-20 West Interchange, the I-285 Westside Rebuild project is managed by Georgia DOT's District 7, Metro Atlanta. The projects are replacing the existing pavement that is in poor overall condition along I-285's west side.
