Cary, NC - The Towns of Cary, Apex, and Morrisville are encouraging water customers to use water wisely as ongoing dry weather and increased summer demand continue to place pressure on the region's water supply. Mandatory water restrictions are not currently in effect. However, residents and businesses can help by following year-round conservation measures and using water efficiently - particularly outdoors.

"Thanks to decades of conservation efforts and long-term planning, our communities are well prepared," said Jamie Revels, Cary Utilities Director. "We're asking customers to keep making smart choices about water use. Small actions taken by thousands across the community can have a meaningful impact on extending our available water supply during this period of drought."

Utility staff are monitoring conditions daily and evaluating water supply trends, weather forecasts, Jordan Lake levels, and customer demand to determine whether additional conservation measures may become necessary in the coming weeks.

Jordan Lake continues to provide a reliable water source for Cary, Apex, and Morrisville. While lake levels have gradually declined due to ongoing drought conditions, decades of investment in water supply planning, conservation programs, and regional partnerships have strengthened the region's long-term water resilience.

The communities are also supporting regional water reliability by making a portion of the City of Durham's Jordan Lake water allocation available while Durham operates under Stage 2 water shortage restrictions. This partnership helps maximize available water resources while ensuring a dependable supply for all participating communities.

The Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility continues to operate exceptionally well, providing safe and reliable drinking water every day. Using water efficiently now helps reduce unnecessary demand and preserve available supplies if dry conditions continue.

How You Can Help
Customers are encouraged to:

  • Follow the year-round Alternate Day Watering schedule for automated irrigation systems.
  • Water landscapes only when needed and limit irrigation to approximately one inch per week, including rainfall.
  • Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation.
  • Check irrigation systems for leaks or broken sprinkler heads.
  • Repair household leaks promptly.
  • Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.
  • Turn off the faucet while brushing teeth or shaving.
Collectively, these simple actions can significantly reduce peak summer water demand and help preserve available water supplies.
