Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Solar Racing Team was featured in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch ahead of the team's return to national competition for the first time in years. The article details the team's preparation for the American Solar Challenge, a multiday, 1,500-mile road race from Minneapolis to Amarillo, Texas, beginning July 25.
The roughly 25-member student team hand-built a new solar car, named Orion, largely from scratch, including hand-soldering their own solar panels - a practice few competing programs still undertake. The team, which qualified for the Formula Sun Grand Prix last summer after years away from competition, will attempt to qualify for the American Solar Challenge at a track race next week.
The race route will pass through the SIUE campus on July 27, with cars expected to arrive between 2:30 and 6 p.m. via Illinois Route 157, marking the first stage stop of the multiday journey toward Amarillo.
