Selected Shorts Returns to The Avram with ‘Love, Life and Baseball’ July 18

The hit radio show and podcast Selected Shorts returns to the Avram Theater at Stony Brook Southampton for an evening of live storytelling inspired by summer nights, stadium lights, and the pleasures of a life well lived.

Hosted by author and co-director of BookEnds, Meg Wolitzer, "Love, Life and Baseball" features performers Joe Morton (Going Dutch), Katrina Lenk (Apples Never Fall), and Mike Doyle (Almost Love), who will bring stories by renowned writers Dave Eggers, Alice McDermott, and Steven Millhauser to life on The Avram stage.

Morton is an Emmy Award-winning television, film, and stage veteran, currently seen on the Fox comedy series Going Dutch with Denis Leary. He is best known as Rowan/Eli Pope in Shonda Rhimes' groundbreaking series Scandal. In film, Morton is widely recognized as the mute alien in John Sayles' The Brother from Another Planet, and as the ill-fated scientist, Miles Dyson, in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Other notable film credits include: Speed, Of Mice and Men, Ali, Blues Brothers 2000, and as Cyborg's dad, Dr. Silas Stone, in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and theJustice League franchise. Morton made his Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning musicalHair, followed by a starring role in Raisin, for which he garnered a Tony nomination and Theatre World Award.

Katrina Lenk

Lenk recently starred as Elvira in the Encores! revival of High Spirits. She can be seen in a major recurring role in the limited series Apples Never Fall on Peacock. Previously, she appeared as a recurring guest star in the final season of Netflix's Ozark. Lenk starred as Bobbie in the revival of Stephen Sondheim's Company, the first woman to play the role on Broadway.

Lenk also received acclaim for starring as Dina in The Band's Visit on Broadway, for which she earned Tony, Grammy, and Lucille Lortel Awards. She also received nominations from Outer Critics Circle, Chita Rivera Awards, Drama League, Theatre World Award's Dorothy Loudon Award, and a Clarence Derwent Award (Breakout Female of the Year) for her performance.

Mike Doyle

Doyle has appeared on screen in New Amsterdam, City on a Hill, The Romanoffs, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, The Accidental Wolf, Narcos: Mexico, Jersey Boys, The Invitation, Green Lantern, Fallout, The Greatest, andLaw & Order among others. His stage credits include The New Century at Lincoln Center and Betrayed with the Culture Project.

Doyle wrote and directed the feature films Almost Love starring Kate Walsh, Patricia Clarkson, and Scott Evans, and Passing Through, in which he also stars with Kevin Daniels and Amy Ryan. His next film, Bookends, stars F. Murray Abraham and Caroline Aaron.

Meg Wolitzer

Wolitzer is a New York Times bestselling author of The Female Persuasion, The Interestings, The Ten-Year Nap, The Position, and The Wife, among other novels. A musical of The Interestings is in development. Wolitzer was the guest editor of The Best American Short Stories 2017, and also writes books for young readers.

She is a faculty member in the Department of Creative Writing, Film and Television at Stony Brook University, where she co-founded and co-directs BookEnds, a yearlong intensive for emerging novelists.

Selected Shorts is produced by Symphony Space in New York City and brings acclaimed actors together to perform short fiction live on stage, one story at a time. It is performed in New York as well as other locations in the U.S, and is a weekly public radio show and podcast hosted by Wolitzer.

The series was conceived over 35 years ago with a simple premise: take great stories by well-known and emerging writers and have them brought to life by terrific actors of stage and screen. Whether featuring stories around a lively theme, the favorite works of a guest author, or a special collaboration, each Selected Shorts event is a unique night of literature in performance.
