WASHINGTON, DC - Today, after Donald Trump abruptly canceled the signing ceremony for the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) criticized this decision and called on him to sign this landmark bill as soon as possible. This bipartisan bill which she helped pass would be the biggest housing package in decades, aimed at increasing the supply of housing while also decreasing costs for hardworking Americans. Unfortunately on the day he was supposed to sign the bill, Donald Trump said that he would prevent the housing package from becoming law until Congress passes the SAVE America Act, the Republican bill making it harder for Americans to vote.
Below is the transcript of Senator Rosen's remarks:
"I do want to say a few things about the landmark, bipartisan housing bill I helped pass that was supposed to be signed into law today, until Donald Trump abruptly canceled the signing ceremony.
In Nevada, we know far too well how severely the housing crisis is impacting our families.
At a time when the cost of living is going up and up and up because of Trump's actions, hardworking Nevadans are struggling with the sky-high costs of housing.
And this is not a new problem, it has been felt for years - which is why I ran for reelection promising that I would make it a priority to tackle this crisis from all angles and do everything that I could to lower housing costs.
That's why both parties, Democrats and Republicans, overwhelmingly passed the bipartisan "21st Century ROAD to Housing Act," and we were looking forward to it being signed into law today.
This bill will cut unnecessary red tape that gets in the way of building new housing, which will allow companies to construct new housing and that increases the supply, which will in turn help lower costs.
This bipartisan bill will also help crack down on bad actors who buy up housing and jack prices up.
That's why we need this bill to become law today.
I'm outraged that Donald Trump abruptly canceled the signing ceremony for this bipartisan bill, and is threatening, all of us, the whole country, to withhold addressing our housing crisis until his extreme, partisan bill to nationalize elections is passed.
Trump is again prioritizing his own partisan interests, his own interests, over lowering housing costs for hardworking families at a time when they're being squeezed by rising costs.
It's clear to everyone that Trump has never focused on making things more affordable. Just look at his obsession over his White House Ballroom and the slush fund to pay January 6th insurrectionists.
But even for him, this is a new low for him. It's shameful and I'm calling on him to sign this overwhelmingly bipartisan bill as soon as possible to help our families."
