(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) - Today, more than 300 employees of Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company volunteered with 25 local non-profit organizations to help serve communities across the company's service area in an enterprise-wide Day of Caring. The work includes painting, building, landscaping, cleaning and packing meals.
"Our employees have shown time and again how deeply they care about the communities we serve," said Mary Kate Gray, manager of Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs. "Day of Caring provides us not only the opportunity to help these organizations achieve their missions, but to also see firsthand the important work they're doing and the impact they have in our communities each and every day."
Day of Caring is part of LG&E and KU's annual employee-giving campaign called Power of One, which brings together monetary giving and volunteerism in the communities where employees live and work. For the last six years, the company's Power of One Campaign has raised nearly $2 million through employee donations and additional support from the LG&E and KU Foundation.
While employee giving and volunteerism have been part of the company's culture for decades, the Power of One campaign began in 2005 and has raised over $35 million. In total, LG&E and KU employees report volunteering over 15,000 hours of service in their communities each year.
