IKM Architecture Delivers New OhioHealth Health Center to Serve a Growing Community

OhioHealth has officially opened the Canal Winchester Health Center, a $31 million, 42,846-square-foot facility designed to expand access to high-quality, convenient care in one of central Ohio's fastest-growing communities. Located at the intersection of Gender Road and Waterloo Street, the three-story center is a visible landmark along the highway, defined by a bold façade and prominent signage that reinforces OhioHealth's brand identity.

IKM Architecture partnered with OhioHealth and the rest of the design-build team to deliver the project under an accelerated schedule and within local zoning constraints. Our team reimagined OhioHealth's prototype medical office building model to fit site-specific conditions while ensuring continuity with the system's brand standards. By phasing design documents for site, core and shell, and interior fit-out, we expedited construction by approximately three months - demonstrating how thoughtful design coordination can create both efficiency and value. Lessons learned from similar facilities were applied to enhance functionality, reduce long-term operational challenges, and ensure this facility serves the community effectively well into the future.

The health center combines a 10,000-square-foot freestanding emergency department - featuring 12 private treatment rooms, advanced imaging (CT, x-ray, ultrasound), a resuscitation suite, and dual walk-in and ambulance access - with a 32,846-sqaure-foot medical office building housing primary care, OB/GYN, sports medicine, urology, mammography, and rotating specialty clinics in cardiology, rheumatology, and general surgery.

The Canal Winchester Health Center expands emergency and outpatient services, creates more than 50 new jobs, and achieves LEED Silver and Energy Star 75 standards for sustainability. For OhioHealth, the project sets a new design process standard for future medical office buildings; for the community, it delivers a state-of-the-art healthcare hub that brings care closer to home.
