LOS ANGELES - Equality California, the nation's largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, congratulated former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra on advancing to the November general election in the race for Governor of California.
"These results demonstrate that Californians are looking for experienced, values-driven leadership to guide our state through a challenging moment for our country," said Tony Hoang, Executive Director of Equality California. "Xavier Becerra has spent his career standing up for civil rights, defending access to healthcare, protecting immigrant families, and fighting for the communities that need it most. We are proud to congratulate him on his primary election victory."
Throughout his career, Becerra has been a steadfast champion for LGBTQ+ equality. As California Attorney General, he defended marriage equality, challenged discriminatory policies targeting LGBTQ+ people, and fought to protect access to healthcare and reproductive freedom. As Secretary of Health and Human Services, he helped defend healthcare access for millions of Americans and strengthened protections for vulnerable communities.
"At a time when LGBTQ+ people are facing coordinated attacks across the country, California needs a governor who has not only spoken out, but taken action to defend our community," Hoang continued. "From standing up to Donald Trump in court, to affirming that transgender healthcare is medically necessary at the highest levels of our nation's health system, Xavier Becerra has used all of his positions of power to defend our community's rights and dignity. If tonight's results are any indication, California is ready for our Becerra Era."
The 2026 gubernatorial election comes at a pivotal moment for California as state leaders continue working to protect fundamental freedoms and serve as a national firewall against attacks coming from Washington, D.C.
Equality California proudly endorsed Becerra in March 2026.
