LADWP Completes Slurry Backfilling, 24-Hour Curing Underway as Large Pipe Restoration Enters Final Phase

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 21, 2026) - Mid day today, LADWP crews completed backfilling the site of last Thursday's watermain break on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, near Palm Avenue. The 24-hour slurry curing process has begun, moving the project one step closer to reopening the road to the public. While the slurry cures, pipe disinfection, water quality testing, and regulatory approvals are also taking place to ensure water quality requirements are met, before returning the pipeline to service. LADWP expects street reopening and full pipe restoration by end of week.

As LADWP wraps up their operations at the site, high quality, safe water will continue to be served to the community. Until the repaired 36-inch pipe is returned to service, customers are still urged to conserve water to avoid residents and businesses on upper floors from experiencing lower pressure during periods of high demand. For any water service concerns, call 1-800-DIAL-DWP for assistance.

The affected trunk line, originally installed in 1916, is part of LADWP's high-capacity water transmission system. LADWP continues investing in its water infrastructure reliability by:

  • Replacing 240,000 feet of distribution mainline per year.
  • Maintaining a leak rate 36% lower than the national average.
  • Setting a goal of replacing three times the amount of trunk line by FY 2029-2030, focusing on the highest-risk segments.

These long-term efforts strengthen the water system and help prevent future disruptions.

LADWP urges customers to be aware of road closures in the following streets and intersections. Soft closure is limited access; Hard closure has no access.

Hard closures: Sunset and Horn, Sunset east of Larrabee, Pam Ave and Santa Monica, Larrabee and Santa Monica, Palm south of Nelles and Palm north of Nelles

Soft closures: Sunset and San Vicente, Sunset and Larrabee to north and south, Sunset west of Sherbourne, Holloway between Hancock and Palm, and Cynthia and San Vicente.
