DeLauro Condemns President Trump’s Attacks on Pope Leo XIV

Today, U.S. Representative Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) responded to President Trump's nonsensical attacks on Pope Leo XIV in which the President described the Pope as "weak on crime":

"As a Catholic Member of Congress, I am appalled by President Trump's disgraceful attacks on His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.

"Calling the Holy Father 'WEAK on Crime' is ridiculous. Time after time, Trump fails to meet the dignity befitting a President of the United States. This statement, and the AI image he posted depicting himself as Jesus Christ is blasphemous and an affront to the more than one billion Catholics around the world, including millions of American Catholics, who look to Pope Leo for moral and spiritual leadership.

"As Pope Leo said, he is not a politician. He is a religious leader. His calls for peace are rooted in his faith, in the Gospel, and in the words of Christ himself: 'Blessed are the peacemakers'. At a moment when innocent lives are being lost and the world is desperate for a steady moral voice, the Pope is doing exactly what a Pope should do: advocating for peace, human dignity, and care for the needy.

"I applaud Pope Leo for standing firm, as he said, 'I have no fear of the Trump administration, or speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel.'

"I stand with him. I will not stay silent while the President of the United States attacks a man of God for preaching peace."
