UTMB hosts symposium on psychiatry and women's health

September 18, 2025 9:00 a.m.

The University of Texas Medical Branch welcomes three celebrated researchers as presenters at the "Navigating Dual Frontiers: Psychiatry & Women's Health Symposium," happening today in Levin Hall.

Dr. Marc E. Lippman, a professor of Oncology and Internal Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center, will present the morning keynote, "The Role of DISTRESS in the Occurrence and Progression of Breast Cancer in Women."

Dr. Charles B. Nemeroff, chair and professor of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, will present the afternoon keynote, "The Management of Treatment Resistant Depression: The Art of Science."

Several UTMB investigators also will present at the symposium:

  • Dr. Jia Zhou, professor, Chemical Biology Program, Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology, will present "Drug Discovery of Potent and Specific CDK9 Inhibitors and Protein Degraders for Cancer Therapy."
  • Dr. Brendan Prideaux, assistant professor, Department of Neurobiology, will present "Multi-omic Mass Spectrometry Imaging for Drug Discovery and Development."
  • Dr. Sadaf Milani, assistant professor, Department of Epidemiology, School of Public and Population Health, will present "Sex Differences in Pain and Cognition in Later Life."
  • Dr. Michael L. Goodman, associate professor, Department of Population Health and Health Disparities, School of Public and Population Health, will present "The Architecture of Flourishing: Designing Socio-ecologies for Connection, Resilience, and Holistic Well-being."
  • Dr. Guilio Taglialatela, vice president, Brain Health and director, Moody Brain Health Institute, will present "Alzheimer's Disease Neuropathology without Dementia: Unveiling the Mechanisms of a Cognitive Resilient Brain."
  • Dr. Jonathan Hommel, associate director, Center for Addiction Sciences & Therapeutics and associate professor, Pharmacology & Toxicology, will present "Neural Circuits and Behavior: Novel Therapeutic Molecules for Psychiatric Disorders."
  • Federico Salas-Lucia, assistant professor of the Medicine and Neuroscience Institute, The University of Chicago and a former member of Dr. Antonio Bianco's Laboratory, will present their work, "Thyroid Hormone Signaling in Neurodevelopment." Bianco is senior vice president of Health Affairs, dean of the John Sealy School of Medicine and chief research officer at UTMB.

UTMB president and Health System CEO Dr. Jochen Reiser will make opening and closing remarks.
