Today, on National 988 Day, we're highlighting resources available right here in Independence to support mental health and suicide prevention. Whether you or someone you love is struggling, there are programs, services, and people ready to help.
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7. You can:
This service connects you with trained crisis counselors who can provide immediate help.
Call 911 in case of an emergency.
A partnership between the Independence Fire Department and Health Services Division, ARCH responds to 911 and 988 calls related to mental health, substance use, and quality-of-life issues.
Specially trained paramedics and social workers provide on-site care and connect residents with tailored resources. In 2024 alone, ARCH supported more than 760 people in our community.

Parks naturally support mental health by giving residents space to connect and recharge. In addition, programs like the pick-up chess program at George Owens Nature Park and activities at the Palmer Center offer opportunities for mental stimulation, social connection, and wellness.
Opening in late 2026, the new Three Trails Behavioral Hospital will bring expanded services to Independence and the Kansas City region.
