Congresswoman Simon Brings Over $176 Million Home to the East Bay for Local Health Centers, Biomedical Research, Arts, and Public Safety

OAKLAND, CA - Congresswoman Lateefah Simon (D-CA-12) has brought over $176 million in federal funding home to the East Bay since the start of 2026. In the month of May alone, she announced over $34 million for organizations and projects across CA-12. The latest round of funding secures by the Congresswoman will go towards biomedical research, healthcare, public safety initiatives, and the arts.

"It is one of my top priorities to bring federal funding home to improve the everyday lives of my constituents" said Congresswoman Simon. "The $176 million in funding I've secured since the start of the year will help bolster the incredible arts and culture of CA-12, support cutting-edge health research, and bolster local health centers.

"I will continue fighting to ensure that institutions and organizations in CA-12 receive the federal funds they deserve. I look forward to seeing how this funding builds on the vibrancy of our district and helps real people in their day-to-day lives."

More details on the grants Congresswoman Simon announced for May can be found below:

Over $17 million from the Department of Health and Human Services will go to health centers throughout the East Bay. The health centers receiving funding include Asian Health Services, La Clinica De La Raza, The West Oakland Health Council, Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute, Lifelong Medical Care, and Davis Street Community Center, Inc.

Nearly $4 million from the Department of Justice will go toward updating forensic laboratories and technical systems and a resource center to address sexual assault in prisons. This funding will help local police departments process crime scene materials and bring justice to survivors of crime quickly and effectively.

Over $8 million will go to the University of California, Berkeley for scientific research and innovation. The grants will fund projects spanning from allergy and infectious disease research to diabetes and mental health research.

The Alameda Health System will receive over $2 million for an addiction medicine fellowship program and HIV and AIDS treatment and prevention. Various health centers will also receive funding to continue their work. Additionally, the Kaiser Foundation Research Institute will receive nearly $300,000 for research on oral diseases and disorders.

$63,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts will go to projects in the East Bay focused on preserving Black dance traditions and honoring Chicano music. This funding is essential to preserving cultural heritage and identity in CA-12 and beyond.
