APMA Continues to Lead Advocacy Efforts to Prevent Expanded Use of Prior Authorization in Medicare

APMA continues its strong opposition to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction (WISeR) Model. APMA partnered with the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and other medical societies to commend members of the House Appropriations Committee for passing an amendment by Representative Lois Frankel (D-FL) to the FY2026 House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill that would restrict funding for the WISeR Model. The letter also requests significant changes to the model, including delaying its implementation, strengthening physician engagement, and increasing transparency and guardrails.

APMA also endorsed H.R. 5940, Seniors Deserve SMARTER (Streamlined Medical Approvals for Timely, Efficient Recovery) Care Act. Introduced by Representative Suzan DelBene (D-WA), this legislation would repeal the WISeR Model and prevent the expanded use of prior authorization in fee-for-service Medicare.

Together, these efforts reflect APMA's ongoing advocacy to reduce administrative burden, protect patient access to timely care, and ensure podiatrists can focus on delivering high-quality treatment with limited regulatory burdens.
