Racing on the Edge: How DS Automobiles France stole the SailGP speed record

"It's pure adrenaline" - those were the words of French driver Quentin Delapierre after breaking the SailGP speed record, turning DS Automobiles France into the fastest team on water.

That's the focus of the latest episode of Racing on the Edge, which goes behind-the-scenes of the historic moment in Sassnitz earlier this season.

In wind speeds of 36 km/h, the French reached an eye-watering speed of 107.63 km/h, eclipsing the Danish team's previous record of 103.93 km/h, which was set on the same Sassnitz racecourse - one year apart.

The moment unfolded on the first day of the event, when the Danish, French and Spanish accelerated to insane speeds on the bearaway from Mark 1, with all three teams eclipsing the previous speed record on the same afternoon.

But only DS Automobiles France was able to retain control, with the Danish and Spanish teams both suffering dramatic nosedives after reaching the top speeds.

The speed record is set in the wider context of the Danish team's season as they trade conservative consistency for a gloves-off approach to racing following their acquisition by American Magic. "The pressure is on them to turn things around," says SailGP commentator Lisa Darmanin.

But the loss of the speed record combined with a 10th place finish in Sassnitz seems to deflate the team, who currently sit eighth in the overall standings.

"When you think about a speed record, it ignites everyone's imagination - a record is something that is yours to hold onto," says Darmanin in the episode, "but on the other hand sometimes it might end up defining you."
