Community safety takes centre stage at roundabout opening

A major intersection upgrade designed to improve road safety is now complete and has been officially opened at the junction of Flores Road and Eastward Road in Utakarra.

The new roundabout replaces the former T-intersection, delivering a safer and more efficient road connection for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians at a site where 13 serious crashes were recorded in the five years leading up to a 2023 safety audit.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the project was a significant investment in community safety and would help prevent accidents at the intersection.

"This new roundabout will greatly improve safety for all road users while also enhancing traffic flow through this important residential and commercial transport corridor," he said.

"Improving road safety is one of the most important investments we can make as a community and this project demonstrates what can be achieved when different levels of government work together towards a common goal.

"I would like to sincerely thank the State Government for its support through the Black Spot Program, which played a critical role in bringing this important project to fruition.

"The grant funding has enabled the City to deliver a high-quality infrastructure upgrade that will benefit residents, businesses and visitors for many years to come," he added.

The roundabout, constructed by local contractor Red Dust Holdings, had been designed to accommodate heavy vehicles, including RAV7 road trains, ensuring it meets the needs of local industry while improving safety outcomes.

Significant landscaping of the area which includes the planting of 60 trees will take place during the next planting season.

The $5 million upgrade was jointly funded, with the State Government contributing $2,986,267 through Main Roads WA and the Department of Transport's Major Infrastructure Black Spot Program, while the City funded the remaining cost.

This project aligns with the Liveable theme of the Strategic Community Plan and reflects the organisation's commitment to maintaining a safe, connected and efficient transport network.
