Gov. Reynolds calls special session to amend MEGA program

Governor Reynolds will convene the General Assembly of Iowa on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., for a special session with the sole and singular purpose of enacting amendments to the state's Major Economic Growth Attraction (MEGA) program.

Governor Kim Reynolds and Mesabi Metallics Chairman Rewant Ruia joined President Donald Trump yesterday at the White House to announce that Iowa will be the future home for a multi-billion-dollar integrated steel complex, the largest steel manufacturing investment in American history.

The state of Iowa and Mesabi Metallics have executed a memorandum of understanding outlining the terms of the partnership. Because of the size of Mesabi Metallic's investment-the largest-ever private investment in Iowa-adjustments are needed to the MEGA program.

"On Friday, the legislature will return to the Iowa State Capitol to advance the most consequential economic development opportunity ever for our state," Governor Reynolds said. "With reasonable and limited updates to an already-existing economic development program, we will accelerate major capital investment into our state, strengthen our economic trajectory, and shape the future of our state and region for generations."

The governor has issued a Proclamation of Special Session in accordance with Article IV, Section 11, and Article III, Section 2, of the Constitution of the State of Iowa.
