Community Food Drive Statement

For Immediate Release
November 8, 2025

The City of Madison is taking steps to help address the threat to community food security caused by the ongoing federal government shutdown and resulting lapse in FoodShare benefits. These include launching a food drive this week to collect donations for the Second Harvest Foodbank.

The City's Double Dollars Program will also continue to provide some nutrition benefits to SNAP users, regardless of the balance on their EBT cards. This is made possible in part by donations from Willy Street Co-op and Community Action Coalition. The City is continuing to explore other ways to leverage City resources and partnerships to help individuals in need during this crisis.

Many individuals, local businesses, and organizations have also stepped forward to help meet the basic needs of our neighbors, friends, and family. The City applauds this generosity and encourages local employers to help facilitate food drives and other efforts to combat food insecurity in the Madison area.

"I want to thank our dedicated City employees and our community as a whole for rallying together during the federal shutdown. If you are able, please join this show of unity," said Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. "I also want to make clear that funding for federal FoodShare benefits is vital to the stability and well-being of thousands of communities across the country. We need our federal leaders to prioritize this program as an essential service immediately."

Residents can join City employees taking part in the food drive by dropping off non-perishable goods in donation bins located in the first-floor lobbies of the City County Building and the Madison Municipal Building. The most needed items include canned foods, beans, cereal, rice, pasta and pasta sauce, and peanut butter.

Individuals experiencing food insecurity can find information about local food resources on the Public Health Madison and Dane County website and by calling or texting United Way's 211 Wisconsin hotline.
