Downtown Joliet’s Jackson Street bridge eastbound lane closure begins June 12

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that the Jackson Street bridge over the Des Plaines River, in Joliet, will be reduced short-term from one lane in both directions to a single westbound lane, beginning, weather permitting, Friday, June 12.

The lane closure is due to corrosion of the structural steel on portions of the bridge, discovered during a recent evaluation. The current posted weight restrictions on the bridge will remain in place.

A detour will direct eastbound traffic to Broadway, Ruby (Illinois 53) and Chicago (Illinois 53) streets.

The repairs are expected to start in late June and completed in July. After completion, the bridge will be returned to one lane in each direction.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
