Larson Statement on the Indictment of Former FBI Director James Comey

East Hartford, CT - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Justice indicted former FBI Director James Comeyat the urging of President Trump.

Following complaints from the President that his political adversaries were not facing prosecution, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was fired and replaced with Lindsey Halligan, President Trump's former personal attorney, who has never prosecuted a case. She signed Director Comey's indictment.

"Prosecuting political enemies with little to no evidence is straight out of the authoritarian playbook," said Larson. "In the last couple weeks, President Trump put his thumb on the scales of justice to deliver this phony indictment, led a campaign to try to take Jimmy Kimmel off the air - threatening to pull broadcast licenses from media outlets he did not agree with, and had his Department of Homeland Security issue a 'report' attacking top Democrats, including myself, for speaking out forcefully against his policies. This lawfare is what we have come to expect from regimes like Russia and North Korea, not the United States of America. I applaud Director Comey for not backing down and have full confidence he can beat these trumped-up charges. We will continue, as will all Americans, to speak out. America will not be silenced."
