The City of San Rafael has received an American Public Works Association (APWA) award for the Downtown Carnegie Library renovation, recognizing it as the top "Historical Restoration/Preservation Project (under $5 million)" in the APWA NorCal Chapter.
The renovation modernized the historic building with $3 million in accessibility and infrastructure upgrades, plus enhanced community spaces and additional restrooms-making the library more welcoming, comfortable, and usable for everyone.
San Rafael celebrated the project with a grand reopening in September 2025, welcoming residents back into the renewed Carnegie Library. This work was funded through state library grants and private donations that helped bring the vision to life.

The San Rafael Fire Department is preparing to conduct a prescribed pile burn on San Rafael Hill as part of our ongoing vegetation management and wildfire mitigation efforts. This important work is one component of a broader strategy to reduce hazardous fuels in our open spaces and strengthen protection for the surrounding neighborhoods and communities adjacent to this area.
Why it matters: Over time, dead vegetation and accumulated brush increase wildfire risk and fire intensity. By conducting carefully planned and professionally managed pile burns, we can safely remove excess fuels under controlled conditions. This proactive approach helps reduce the likelihood of large, fast-moving wildfires and supports healthier, more resilient open space ecosystems.
What you need to know: Prescribed pile burning has been moved to between March 18 and April 3, weather permitting. All burn operations are dependent on favorable conditions, including appropriate humidity levels, wind speeds, and air quality considerations, to ensure safe and effective implementation. If conditions are not ideal, operations will be rescheduled to prioritize public safety and environmental responsibility. This project is funded through Measure C.
Sign up for Alert Marin's prescribed burning notifications to be notified when prescribed burning happens near your home.
