A new white paper from ACI EUROPE highlights how research and innovation supported by SESAR are helping to advance multimodal travel at Europe's airports.
The paper, Bridging Multimodal Gaps: Solutions for Improving Passenger Experience and Securing On-Time Arrivals, explores how stronger integration between air, rail and other transport modes can improve the passenger experience while supporting on-time arrivals and more sustainable mobility.
Referencing the European ATM Master Plan, the paper notes that airports sit at a critical intersection between air and ground mobility and that improving multimodality is an important - though often underdeveloped - component in delivering a more connected and predictable Digital European Sky.
Drawing on input from an expert group of more than 40 airports across Europe, the paper provides an overview of existing multimodal initiatives, including SESAR-supported projects working on different aspects of multimodal integration, such as MultiModX,Travel Wise, SIGN-AIR,MAIA, PRIAM, X-TEAM D2D and IMHOTEP.
The white paper also assesses practical opportunities for improvement, and proposes a set of actionable, implementation-ready solutions. It proposes a set of operational, policy and research recommendations to strengthen multimodal connectivity, including integrated mobility platforms, stronger stakeholder coordination, improved disruption management and user-friendly solutions.
