Colleagues,
We are thrilled to announce that David Shipley, a principled, brilliant journalist known for his intellectual curiosity and leadership, is returning to The New York Times as an editor at large.
In this new role, David will focus on producing and editing high-impact, ambitious editorial packages. The first will be a centerpiece of our upcoming 175th anniversary coverage, bringing together a series of pieces that explore the history of the world and The Times's place in it.
This type of project leverages David's deep experience in long-form storytelling and institutional history, and will benefit from his sharp eye and creative vision. We're happy he's bringing his skills back to The Times, and he's eager to collaborate across the newsroom.
Most recently, David was editorial page editor at The Washington Post, leading a department that included the editorial board, a world-class roster of columnists and a multiplatform digital team. Prior to that, he was the founding executive editor of Bloomberg View, where he oversaw the launch and growth of its opinion and commentary operations. He also served as the executive editor of The New Republic.
David's well-deserved reputation as a fair-minded and terrific editor precedes him. But many of us also remember him as a beloved colleague. He began here in 1990 as an assigning editor for the Op-Ed page, and went on to hold a number of leadership roles, including deputy editorial page editor, Op-Ed editor and National enterprise editor, as well as senior editor roles at the Magazine.
Between his time in journalism, he also served in the Clinton administration as a special assistant to the president and senior presidential speechwriter.
David is a graduate of Williams College and a former Watson fellow. He starts next week and will report to Monica.
We are incredibly fortunate to have David back in the newsroom as we look toward our 175th year. Please join us in welcoming him back.
