Former Florida State Rep. Roy Hardemon from Miami passes away at 63

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party mourns the passing of former State Representative Roy Hardemon, a passionate advocate for Liberty City and one of its most determined sons.

Born and raised in Miami, Hardemon rose from the neighborhood's struggles to become a voice for its people in the Florida House, representing District 108 from 2016 to 2018. Known for his direct style and deep community ties, he never forgot the streets and families that shaped him, dedicating his career to improving conditions for the working class and underserved.

During his time in Tallahassee, Hardemon championed legislation to expand youth programs, improve public health, and increase opportunity for those with criminal records seeking a second chance. He co-sponsored laws benefiting children's initiatives and successfully carried a resolution honoring the creators of the Oscar-winning film Moonlight, which shined a global spotlight on Liberty City. After his legislative term, Hardemon continued his activism at home as Chair of the Model City Community Advisory Committee, pressing for reinvestment in neighborhoods long left behind.

Though his political life was not without controversy, Hardemon's legacy endures as that of a fighter for fairness, dignity, and access for all. His colleagues and constituents alike remember him as a man of integrity who put people over politics, a belief he carried to his final days. The Miami-Dade Democratic Party extends heartfelt condolences to the Hardemon family and honors Roy's enduring contributions to Liberty City and the broader Miami community.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried released the following the passing of former State Representative Roy Hardemon:

"Roy Hardemon dedicated his life to fighting for his community and lifting up the voices of those too often left behind. His legacy of service, courage, and love for Liberty City will continue to inspire all who knew him. Roy served Florida's House District 108 from 2016 to 2018 and was known for his fierce advocacy. During his time in office, he championed youth programs, senior services, public health initiatives, and cultural projects that highlighted and uplifted his community. Even after leaving the Legislature, he remained a steadfast voice for Liberty City and Miami-Dade County. He will be deeply missed."
