How Do We Compare? Michigan vs. Rutgers

Game 8: Saturday, October 31, 2026 | Michigan vs. Rutgers | SHI Stadium | 12:30 p.m.

The Wolverines head to New Jersey this Halloween weekend looking to bounce back from a tough 13-6 overtime loss to No. 6 Indiana.

Michigan and Rutgers enter Saturday's matchup with identical 1-3 Big Ten records, both searching for their second conference win. Michigan has dominated the series, winning nine straight against the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers, however, holds a special place in college football history. The university hosted the first intercollegiate football game in 1869, making this a matchup between the birthplace of college football and the winningest program in its history.

But how do their communities compare beyond the scoreboard?

Ann Arbor & New Brunswick Connections

  • Medical Innovation with Global Reach: New Brunswick is home to Johnson & Johnson, founded in 1886 and now a global healthcare leader. Ann Arbor has its own medical technology success stories, including HistoSonics, which developed a noninvasive ultrasound technology to destroy tumors. Both communities demonstrate how local innovation can have a worldwide impact.
  • Art Beyond the Classroom: Rutgers' Zimmerli Art Museum houses more than 75,000 works, including a renowned collection of Soviet nonconformist art. Ann Arbor's University of Michigan Museum of Art is another nationally recognized cultural destination, bringing art and creative experiences to audiences well beyond campus.
  • Investing in the Future of Life Sciences: New Brunswick's HELIX, a major downtown health and life sciences development, welcomed Rutgers' Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2026. Ann Arbor's longstanding strengths in university research, healthcare, and medical technology have similarly helped establish the region as a destination for life sciences innovation.

On the Field

Michigan holds a commanding 9-1 advantage in the all-time series against Rutgers, winning nine consecutive meetings since the Scarlet Knights claimed the first matchup, 26-24, in 2014.

The Wolverines' most dominant performance came in 2016, when they shut out Rutgers 78-0, recording one of the largest margins of victory in Michigan football history. Their closest win came in 2020, a 48-42 triple-overtime thriller. Michigan won the most recent meeting 31-7 in 2023.

Historically, Michigan has averaged 43 points per game against the Scarlet Knights. But after last week's defensive battle against Indiana, the Wolverines will be looking to get their offense back on track.

Off the Field

Ann Arbor and New Brunswick are both home to major public research universities, but their communities have notably different economic profiles.

Ann Arbor's population of 122,233 is more than twice New Brunswick's 57,133. Educational attainment also differs significantly, with 77.9% of Ann Arbor adults age 25 and older holding a bachelor's degree or higher, compared with 23.4% in New Brunswick.

Median household income is $82,212 in Ann Arbor and $65,810 in New Brunswick. Despite the income difference, New Brunswick has a considerably higher cost of living, with an index of 121.4 compared with Ann Arbor's 99.7, where 100 represents the national average.

The universities offer one of this week's most interesting comparisons. U-M enrolls 52,855 students, while Rutgers enrolls 52,269, a difference of just 586 students. Both institutions are also major contributors to research and innovation. In fiscal year 2024, Michigan reported $2.16 billion in research expenditures, ranking fourth nationally, compared with Rutgers' $836.8 million and No. 45 ranking.

Both universities earn national recognition for academic excellence. Michigan ranks No. 3 among top public universities, compared with Rutgers at No. 14. Michigan also leads in undergraduate engineering (No. 5 versus No. 46) and business (No. 4 versus No. 39), while Rutgers has notable graduate strengths in English, public health, and economics.

The Bigger Picture

Ann Arbor and New Brunswick demonstrate how major research universities can anchor regional economies through talent development, innovation, and industry partnerships. While Ann Arbor stands out for its highly educated population, competitive cost of living, and research investment, New Brunswick benefits from a strong healthcare industry and significant new investment in life sciences.

On Saturday, both football teams are looking for a much-needed Big Ten victory. Michigan has history on its side, but can the Wolverines extend their winning streak against Rutgers to 10 games and get their season back on track?
