UIW Chemistry and Biochemistry Department Receives National Continued Approval

Approval comes from Group considered National Standard of Excellence

San Antonio- September 22, 2025 - The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that the UIW Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry program has been granted continued approval by the American Chemical Society (ACS) Committee on Professional Training (CPT) following the program's 2025 periodic review. The ACS approval is the national standard of excellence for chemistry programs, affirming UIW's commitment to providing students with high-quality preparation for careers in science, medicine, industry and education.

"ACS approval confirms that our chemistry students are learning in a program recognized nationally for excellence," says Dr. Carlos Garcia, dean of the UIW School of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering. "It means our graduates stand out as prepared with research experience, strong communications skills and a degree that carries real weight in science, medicine and industry."

The ACS reviewers commended the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry for its strong and well-funded undergraduate research program, which provides students with multi-semester research experiences leading to conference presentations and publications. The committee also recognized UIW's early recruitment of undergraduates into research projects and its efforts to develop communication standards that strengthen student writing and presentation skills across the curriculum.

"Continued ACS approval means our chemistry students earn a nationally recognized degree that sets them apart for graduate school, professional programs and scientific careers," says Dr. Brian McBurnett, chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. "It also affirms UIW's commitment to excellence, hands-on research and student success, showing that what we do here has impact well beyond our campus."

The ACS approval is valid through the next review cycle in 2031, ensuring UIW chemistry graduates continue to benefit from an ACS-recognized degree program.
