New Mexico is Home to 24 Hispanic-Serving Institutions
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement regarding a decision by the U.S. Department of Education to end Minority-Serving Institution (MSI) grant programs that benefit millions of Americans students:
"In New Mexico and across the country, Minority-Serving Institutions have long played a vital role in expanding access to education and creating pathways to economic opportunity. The Trump administration's decision to eliminate these grant programs is a blatant political move that threatens educational opportunities for students from all backgrounds and wreaks havoc on our schools.
"Eliminating these grant programs will have devastating consequences for our nation's students and close the door to opportunity for our future leaders. At a time when we should be empowering students from all backgrounds, the Trump administration is pushing policies that limit equal access to learning and make it harder to achieve the American Dream.
"As a proud alum of New Mexico Highlands University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution, I will continue to fight to ensure all students have the opportunity to pursue an education."
