WASHINGTON, DC-"Emergency departments (EDs) are a critical part of the nation's safety net, caring for everyone who seeks help-day or night, regardless of insurance status, immigration status, or ability to pay," said L. Anthony Cirillo, MD, FACEP, president of ACEP.
"Emergency physicians stand by our oath to provide the highest quality emergency care to ALL who need it, just like we have every day for more than 50 years. We have not, and will not, waiver from that commitment.
Emergency physicians see firsthand the challenges facing our health care system, but it is important to be clear about what is driving them.
While EDs face boarding and overcrowding, resource shortages, and mounting financial pressures, these problems stem from systemic issues such as a lack of inpatient capacity, workforce shortages, underfunded mental health and substance use treatment, and limited access to primary care.
ACEP urges policymakers and the public to focus on real solutions that strengthen emergency care and preserve our ability to provide lifesaving treatment to all who need it and continue to maintain our nation's safety and security."
