ICYMI: Senator Coons says President Trump owes American people answers on Iran war in new MS NOW op-ed

WASHINGTON - In case you missed it, U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) published an op-ed in MS NOW today criticizing President Trump for launching a war with Iran without a clear strategy, congressional approval, or a plan to protect American service members and civilians in the region. Senator Coons called for the Trump administration to publicly explain the purpose, costs, and goals of the conflict before putting more American lives at risk.

"We are more than a week into the largest war the region has seen in years, without a clear sense of why or for how long. The president may not care about these questions, but I do - and Americans deserve answers to them right now," wrote Senator Coons.

Senator Coons also warned that the administration has failed to articulate a clear end goal for the conflict and criticized the lack of preparation to protect Americans and U.S. service members in the region. Seven American service members have now been killed in the war with Iran, including a service member who died this weekend from injuries sustained in an Iranian strike on a base where U.S. troops were stationed.

"We see the administration also had no plan for our diplomats or civilians trapped in the region. Multiple of our embassies are burning and our consulates have been attacked, while hundreds of thousands of Americans are being told to evacuate without any help from the government. Italy and the United Kingdom were ready to swiftly evacuate their citizens; the government that planned and began the war was not," wrote Senator Coons.

Senator Coons concluded by urging the administration to provide Congress and the American people with clear answers about the war and its objectives.

"Congress and Americans need a public hearing from Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Hegseth about how this happened. They need to lay out a real plan with specific goals they can actually achieve," Senator Coons wrote.
