As Trump’s War of Choice With Iran Rages, Everyday Americans Face Sky-High Gas Prices and a Tanking Job Market Arrow

Donald Trump is pressing forward with his illegal and unpopular war of choice with Iran. His war is deadly and costly - already claiming the lives of seven service members and leaving at least 140 service members injured - and meanwhile, everyday Americans at home are being left to deal with the consequences of even higher prices.

New Consumer Price Index data released today revealed that prices on several necessities rose drastically since last year, including for electricity (+4.8%), medical care services (+4.1%), shelter (+3%), and groceries (+2.4%). This data predates Trump's strikes on Iran, with gas and grocery prices expected to rise even higher in the next month.

Meanwhile, Trump's job market continues to tank as the most recent jobs report found that the U.S. lost 92,000 jobs in February and the unemployment rate bumped up to 4.4%.

In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

"Donald Trump continues to fail Americans. Trump promised to 'lower prices on Day One,' but ever since, he has only doubled down on his disastrous policies that have left working families struggling to fill up the tank, pay their rent, afford their groceries, or purchase prescription drugs. Americans are tired of this president putting his own ego first, while he jeopardizes American lives abroad and leaves working families here at home to fend for themselves."

Since Trump's war in Iran began, oil prices spiked to nearly $120 per barrel, and according to AAA, the price of a gallon of gasoline has risen to $3.58 nationwide - the highest ever under Trump. Meanwhile, Trump says that his priorities are continuing his reckless war with Iran and implementing restrictive voting laws.

Trump's war in Iran cost an estimated $6 billion in the first two days alone - enough to cover a full year of health care for nearly 660,000 Medicaid enrollees. Every major poll since the initial strikes shows that Americans disapprove of Trump's war in Iran, and approximately only a quarter of Americans believe that Trump and Republicans are focused on lowering the cost of living and inflation - despite more than 60% of Americans saying they want their leaders to prioritize those issues.
