Raleigh Fire Department to Honor Fallen Firefighters with Ceremonies

The Raleigh Fire Department will begin honoring its fallen firefighters with memorial ceremonies that will take place on the date of the firefighter's passing. The first of these ceremonies will honor Lt. Herman S. Jones, who died in the line of duty on Jan. 22, 2008.

The ceremonies are part of a department tradition to formally recognize and remember Raleigh firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Each memorial is held in honor of the firefighter's service, dedication, and legacy within the department and the community.

The events will include a wreath laying, a bell ceremony, and remarks honoring the firefighter. Family members, retirees, and members of the department are invited to attend.

The memorial for Lt. Jones is scheduled for Jan. 22, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Keeter Training Center.
