MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Nov. XX, 2025) - Pennsylvania American Water today announced an approximately $8.9 million system investment to replace more than 4.5 miles of water main in East Pennsboro, Fairview, Hampden and Lower Allen townships and Lemoyne and New Cumberland boroughs, Cumberland County. These upgrades will enhance reliability for customers, reduce service disruptions and improve water flow for firefighting.
The series of projects, some of which are ongoing and some which have already been completed, includes replacement of the water main creek crossing on Green Lane Drive in Fairview Township. In August 2024, the water main creek crossing broke due to storm flooding, disrupting service for approximately 48,000 customers. The new infrastructure, now in place, significantly improves reliability and resilience in this critical section of the system.
"Replacing aging water mains like these is vital to help ensure our customers continue to receive safe and reliable water service," said Joseph Woodward, senior director of operations for Pennsylvania American Water. "This type of proactive investment helps prevent main breaks, supports system growth and strengthens our ability to deliver high-quality water around the clock."
In Lower Allen Township, the company is currently installing new six-, eight- and 12-inch ductile iron pipe, replacing six-to-12-inch cast iron and six-to-eight-inch asbestos cement pipe in the following areas:
Earlier this summer, the company began pipe replacement along several streets in Fariview Township and Lemoyne Borough in the following areas:
Crews are also installing new 24-inch ductile iron pipe in the Townes Of Hampden community in Hampden Township. The company has already replaced aged eight-inch iron pipe on High Street in East Pennsboro Township and installed new four-inch pipe on Second Street in New Cumberland Borough.
Crews will work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The company expects to complete the water main installation, including connecting all customer service lines to the new mains, along with final restoration and paving, by the end of November.
During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences. This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic vitality of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
