NPD DUI Checkpoint Results in Six Arrests, Four Firearms Removed from Intoxicated Drivers

A three-hour, multi-agency DUI checkpoint in Norman resulted in six DUI arrests and four firearms being removed from intoxicated drivers Saturday night.

Norman Police Department officers partnered with Cleveland County Sheriff's Office deputies, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers and Oklahoma State Park Rangers for the checkpoint in the area of 108th Avenue NE and Alameda Drive from approximately 6 to 9 p.m. on September 5.

During the operation, officers contacted 303 drivers and identified multiple public safety concerns including:

• 6 DUI arrests
• 3 child endangerment charges
• 4 firearms removed from intoxicated drivers
• 2 citations for transporting an open container

The operation was conducted as part of a coordinated effort to identify impaired drivers and prevent them from putting other motorists, passengers and pedestrians at risk.

"Every impaired driver we take off the road is one potential crash, injury or tragedy prevented," said NPD Lt. Barry Grippen. "This operation also demonstrates why coordinated enforcement is so important. Our officers and partner agencies encountered far more than impaired driving violations-they identified children being placed in danger and firearms in the possession of intoxicated drivers. These are serious public safety concerns."

NPD reminds drivers that impairment can result from alcohol, prescription medication, illegal drugs, or any combination of substances. If you plan to drink or use an impairing substance, make arrangements for a sober ride and never get behind the wheel impaired.
