Koehler bill to modernize transit agencies use of camera-based rearview systems, passes the Senate

SPRINGFIELD - State Senator Dave Koehler's new initiative to allow public transit agencies to use electronic rearview monitoring systems on their buses and transit vehicles has passed the Senate.

"Our public transit drivers work long hours, deal with rapidly changing weather and, most importantly, get you from place to place," said Koehler (D-Peoria) "With the wellbeing of a passenger being in the hands of a driver we want to ensure the drivers have a modern system with better safety measures."

Under current state law, motor vehicles must be equipped with mirrors that provide a view at least 200 feet to the rear. Senate Bill 3149 would permit the installation of approved electronic camera-based rearview systems on public transit vehicles in place of traditional exterior ones. These mirrors must include features such as special coatings, electrical components, or mechanical devices that prevent ice and water from building up and blocking the view. These electronic mirrors would overcome the limitations of physical mirrors, improving blind-spot protection, addressing maintenance and design constraints, and ensuring agencies can take advantage of newer safety technology as long as federal approval remains in place.

"Allowing transit systems to modernize their fleets where federal approval exits is a common-sense step forward," Koehler said. "It lets agencies invest in tools that improve visibility and safety."

Senate Bill 3149 passed out of the Senate and moves to the House for further consideration.
