From Diamond Bank’s DIBS to ContiSX Tokenized Deposits: The Next Evolution of Banking in...

It came with many benefits, but it was also a consequential responsibility: how do you work with some of Nigeria's finest young engineers to keep a bank's servers, core banking systems and general ledger running reliably, every second of the day?

I began my banking technology journey at Diamond Bank's System Automation Unit (SAU) in Lagos. We were the custodians of the technology infrastructure powering one of the most innovative banking institutions ever created in Nigeria. From HP 9000 series servers to Oracle databases, Flexcube and other mission-critical systems, we kept the digital engines of banking running.

At its peak, Diamond Bank was peerless. It gave Nigeria the revolutionary DIBS (Diamond Integrated Banking System), helping to make banking location-agnostic. Suddenly, your money was no longer tied to the branch where you opened your account. Technology was liberating banking from geography. Yes, diamonds live forever, and I still feel Diamond Banking!

But banking has entered a new chapter. What we pioneered at Diamond Bank's SAU, and what banks across Africa have subsequently built upon, must now evolve for a new era of digital finance. That next evolution is tokenized deposits.

What are tokenized deposits? Simply, tokenized deposits are digital representations of commercial bank deposits recorded on blockchain or distributed ledger infrastructure. Each token represents a corresponding deposit liability of the issuing bank, typically denominated in the same sovereign currency as the underlying deposit.

For example, a Nigerian bank could represent N1 million of eligible customer deposits as N1 million in digital deposit tokens on a permissioned blockchain. These tokens could enable programmable payments, automated settlement, real-time transaction visibility and seamless integration with emerging digital financial markets, subject to applicable regulations and the bank's operating framework.

Unlike cryptocurrencies that exist independently of commercial bank deposits, tokenized deposits remain claims against the issuing bank. They bring the familiar economics of traditional banking into a new technological architecture.

Imagine a banking system where payments can be programmed, transactions can be settled with greater efficiency, reconciliation can be automated, and financial assets can interact with deposit money through secure digital infrastructure. That is one of the possibilities of the next generation of banking.

Today, ContiSX is opening paid Proof-of-Concept (POC) engagements to African banks interested in exploring tokenized deposits. Through these engagements, we will provide end-to-end technology demonstrations showing how blockchain-anchored tokenized deposits can modernize banking operations, improve transaction processing, support programmable financial services, and position banks for the emerging digital capital economy.

Our objective is to equip banks with the technological capabilities to remain central to the future of money, payments and capital markets. And we've built this technology on a foundational principle: Triple Sovereignty.

From the era of DIBS at Diamond Bank to the emerging era of blockchain-powered banking, the mission remains the same: use technology to remove frictions, expand possibilities and make financial services work better for people and businesses.

The difference is that the technological canvas has become much bigger. African banks, let us build the next chapter of banking together. Explore ContiSX Technology Licensing and begin a tokenized deposits POC with us: https://contisx.com/licensing

Regulatory note: ContiSX Engineering provides technology infrastructure and POC implementation services only. Participating banks and institutions are responsible for obtaining all necessary regulatory approvals, licenses, permissions and authorizations applicable to their proposed tokenized deposit activities. A technology POC does not constitute authorization to issue or operate tokenized deposits commercially.
