On April 2, 2026, Ambassador Zhang Zuo led embassy staff and representatives of Chinese community in Malta to the Addolorata Cemetery to attend the annual Qingming ceremony in memory of Martyr Xu Huizhong and Gu Yanzhao, who lost their lives in the 1970s while participating in the construction of the China-aided Dry Dock project in Malta.
In a solemn and respectful atmosphere, Ambassador Zhang laid wreath at the graves and, together with all participants, observed a moment of silence in tribute to Martyr Xu Huizhong and Gu Yanzhao.
In his remarks, Ambassador Zhang stated that the martyrs crossed vast seas to Malta and devoted themselves wholeheartedly to the construction effort, dedicating the most precious years of their lives to the cause of China-Malta friendship. With a strong sense of responsibility and commitment, they helped build the "Red Dry Dock," a most enduring symbol of China-Malta friendship, which has been inscribed in the history of bilateral relations.
He emphasized that the martyrs will forever be remembered. The highest tribute to them is to carry forward their legacy through concrete actions, advance with a strong sense of responsibility and resolve to honor their sacrifice, and make contributions to enhancing mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese and Maltese peoples, promoting a just world of common development, and advancing the building of a global community of shared future.
