Ranking Member Shaheen Statement on President Trump’s Meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement following President Trump's meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán at the White House:

"President Trump is right to say that Europe needs to reduce its reliance on the Russian energy exports that fuel Putin's war machine. I urge President Trump to not give Prime Minister Orbán a pass as Hungary actually increases its dependence on Russian energy and has provided nearly seven billion dollars to the Kremlin's coffers since the beginning of this war. That's why Senator Tillis and I led a bipartisan resolution this week with six Republican co-sponsors urging Hungary, and all other applicable European countries, to end their dependence on Russian energy. If we want to get Putin to the negotiating table, we need to put pressure on his key sources of revenue. I'm pleased President Trump took action against major Russian energy firms last week-he must do the same with their biggest customers like Hungary."
