Dexter Condemns GOP Push to Ban Pride Flags; Rejects Attempts to Silence Her on House Floor

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Last week, U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03), spoke on the House floor to oppose an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would ban Pride flags in common areas and offices across Department of Defense facilities. During her remarks, two House Republicans attempted to silence her by falsely alleging a rules violation. Watch the exchange here.

"Republicans are spending valuable floor time-time that could be used to fund the government or lower costs for working families-trying to ban the display of Pride flags in any workplace or common area of the Department of Defense," Dexter said in her speech. "This obsession with attacking, dehumanizing, and villainizing our LGBTQIA+ community is as sick as it is a waste of time …We see this for what it is. And we refuse to let them win. We will not erase the LGBTQIA+ community."

Rep. Dexter, sworn into office in January, is a proud member of the Congressional Equality Caucusand remains committed to protecting the rights, dignity, and safety of LGBTQIA+ Americans. Dexter voted against the NDAA.
