SEMO Law Enforcement Academy Accepting Applications for Spring 2027 Class

Registration is open through November 20. The full-time academy prepares recruits for Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification through classroom instruction, hands-on training and scenario-based exercises led by experienced law enforcement professionals.

The academy is beginning a new chapter following its integration into the Department of Criminal Justice, Social Work, and Sociology, bringing academy training and academic instruction together to better prepare future officers for today's policing environment.

"We're excited about the new directions at the Academy, from new leadership and a more hands-on, community-based curriculum to upgraded facilities and enhanced technology and equipment," said Dr. Brian Donavant, chair of the Department of Criminal Justice, Social Work, and Sociology. "People are going to see our cadets out training in the community, learning how to better serve and interact with individuals when they return to their agencies."

The academy's updated approach emphasizes both tactical proficiency and community partnerships, preparing graduates to build trust while serving the communities where they work.

"Integrating the Academy with the Department of Criminal Justice, Social Work, and Sociology represents a new approach that helps bridge the gap between tactical academy skills and a more systemic understanding of our communities and the people we serve," Donavant said. "These skills generate better partnerships and positive interactions between law enforcement and the public while helping reduce crime."

Students interested in continuing their education after earning POST certification can also take advantage of SEMO's new 90-credit-hour Bachelor of Science in criminal justice. Beginning this fall, the program provides a faster path to a bachelor's degree while maintaining the same academic quality as the University's traditional criminal justice program. The curriculum also allows eligible students to earn academic credit for Missouri law enforcement academy training, helping officers advance their education while preparing for leadership opportunities in the profession.
