Pet Sheltering Fee Goes Into Effect in October

Published on October 02, 2025

Lincoln Animal Control today announced a $10 increase in pet licensing fees effective October 1. The $10 Capital Humane Society (CHS) Sheltering Fee is the result of a new service contract with CHS approved by the City Council August 11.

The licensing fees plus new shelter fee totals are as follows:

  • Altered dog: $25 license fee + $10 sheltering fee = $35
  • Unaltered dog: $56 license fee + $10 sheltering fee = $66
  • Altered cat: $25 license fee + $10 sheltering fee = $35
  • Unaltered cat: $42 license fee + $10 sheltering fee = $52

As part of the new service contract, Animal Control has also discontinued license fee discounts for pet owners age 62 and older.

Animal Control contracts with CHS for animal shelter services and veterinary care for animals taken to the organization, which averages around 3,000 animals a year. In addition to funding the contract with CHS, fees are also used to sustain Animal Control's services that help ensure the health and well-being of Lincoln's pet population.

Animal Control offers financial assistance to pet owners with limited incomes for part of the cost of spay/neuter services. For more information, contact Lincoln Animal Control at 402-441-7900 or visit lincoln.ne.gov/AnimalControl.
