WASHINGTON, D.C. - For the fourth time, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) voted in favor of a war powers resolution directing the withdrawal of U.S. Armed Forces from hostilities against Iran.
Nearly two weeks ago, President Trump surpassed the 60-day deadline under the War Powers Act after initiating an unnecessary war with Iran without authorization from Congress. This raises urgent constitutional and accountability concerns. Legal experts and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle pointed to the milestone as a key threshold requiring congressional action or an end to unauthorized military operations.
Rep. Sykes said Congress cannot allow any president to ignore the law and continue an open-ended war without the consent of the American people through their elected representatives. Congress must act to reassert its constitutional authority over war powers and ensure that the United States is not drawn further into an open-ended conflict.
"The American people deserve transparency about how and when this war will end," said Rep. Sykes. "I cannot support extending an open-ended conflict in the Middle East when there is no clear exit strategy. Fourteen American servicemembers have already lost their lives, hundreds more have been injured, and families here at home are facing rising costs every day. Congress should be focused on lowering costs and keeping Americans safe, not writing a blank check for another endless conflict."
Rep. Sykes will continue pushing for accountability, supporting servicemembers and their families, and making sure Congress does its job on matters of war and peace.
