AMERICA IN CRISIS: ONE YEAR AFTER REPUBLICANS’ BIG, UGLY BILL

One year ago, Republicans sparked a health care, energy, and cost of living crisis by signing their crowning legislative achievement, their "Big, Ugly Bill," into law. Republicans enacted the largest-ever health care cuts to pay for tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations, and Americans across the country are now in crisis. Millions have had their health care and nutrition assistance ripped away, and families' energy bills have skyrocketed.

"When Republicans passed their 'Big, Ugly Bill,' they chose the wealthy elite over working Americans," said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). "It wasn't beautiful; it was a betrayal. Republicans gutted health care, SNAP, and low-cost, clean energy to benefit billionaires and big corporations. Now, Americans are dealing with a cost-of-living crisis, and they have Donald Trump and Republicans to thank for it. While Trump says, 'I love the inflation' and affordable housing is 'a big yawn' between rounds of golf, Democrats are fighting tooth and nail to lower costs, expand housing, and make life more affordable."

REPUBLICANS GUTTED HEALTH CARE, NOW FAMILIES ARE PAYING THE PRICE

The Republican bill signed into law the largest cut to health care in American history, gutting over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. They promised better health care at a lower cost, but they broke their promise: Americans across the country are paying more for less.

REPUBLICANS' CUTS ARE ENDANGERING LIVES

Across the country, Americans' health is in crisis. Hospitals and clinics are closing, leaving entire communities-particularly rural and low-income ones-with few options for reproductive care.

  • More than 20 Planned Parenthood health centers have closed since the law was signed. The majority of clinic closures have been in rural or medically underserved areas and disproportionately served patients with low incomes.
  • More than 20 million women of color, 56 percent of all women of color in the US, live in states with post-OBBBA clinic closures.
  • More than 840,000 people have been put at risk of losing access to family planning and preventive health services because Title X funding was withheld.

MILLIONS OF FAMILIES ARE GOING HUNGRY

Republicans imposed unprecedented cuts on SNAP and kicked more than 4 million people off food assistance, including over 800,000 children in just the 13 states with available data. In every single state, families have lost access to support for basic nutrition, leaving millions skipping meals and going hungry. For American families, this is a matter of life and death:

Almost 70,000 deaths could result from the Republicans' heightened SNAP work requirements by 2040.

HOW REPUBLICANS' WAR ON CLEAN ENERGY IS COSTING YOU

Republicans' clean energy cuts in their "Big, Ugly Bill" have driven up utility costs for American consumers, slashed good-paying jobs, and wiped out billions of dollars in American energy and manufacturing investment.

Republicans are bending over backwards for their billionaire Big Oil donors, ripping clean energy projects out of the ground and sticking taxpayers with the bill. Thanks to Republicans gutting renewable energy tax credits and other cuts to clean energy, the average family has paid $213 more for their utility bills since Trump took office. Nationally, utility bills are already up 16%, and experts estimate Republicans' bill will send electricity prices even higher, and reduce GDP by $980 billion.

REPUBLICANS STOLE FROM THE WORKING CLASS TO GIVE TO THE RICH

Republicans touted their bill as a boon for working-class Americans. Instead, the bill showered more than $1 trillion in tax cuts on the top 1% and forced working families to pay more. Republican cuts to health care and SNAP benefits combined with Trump's tariff tax resulted in a net tax hike for 80% of families. So while the poorest Americans would effectively pay over $2,000 in tax hikes, multimillionaires get a $300,000 tax cut in just 2027.

Republicans committed the largest reverse Robin Hood ever: they enacted the single-largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in U.S. history.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Republicans' priorities in a nutshell: cut over $1 trillion from health care to fund over $1 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy. Slash SNAP to subsidize corporate tax breaks. Families pay more, so billionaires pay less.
