Appalachian Power acquires Top Hat Wind Facility; will support economic growth in West Virginia

November 13, 2025

CHARLESTON, W.Va., Nov. 13, 2025 - Appalachian Power Company (APCo) today announced the acquisition of a wind farm that has attracted large industrial customers interested in having renewable generation in their energy portfolio.

The Top Hat Wind Facility, with a generating capacity of 204 megawatts (MW), went into service on Friday, Nov. 7.

The Public Service Commission of West Virginia approved the Top Hat Wind Facility in 2023.

"Customers who want to locate or expand in West Virginia seek an energy mix with renewable resources," said Aaron Walker, APCo president and chief operating officer. "Additionally, the addition of the Top Hat Wind Facility is expected to result in a reduction in West Virginia customer rates over the life of the project."

West Virginia customers will see a slight increase in the Environmental and New Generation (ENG) tariff part of the bill. The increase will be in effect on Dec. 12, increasing the bill for a West Virginia residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month by 0.62%, or $1.08. As new users who have committed to these resources come online, combined with other cost-of-service benefits, customers will begin to see a reduction in the ENG tariff and their overall bill.

As the heating season approaches, APCo encourages customers to explore available energy efficiency programs at TakeChargeWV.com and the company's multiple payment options at AppalachianPower.com/Assist.
