American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine – June 18-21, 2025

Event

The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) held its annual forum from June 18-21 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Program

The forum drew more than 2500 attendees. On offer were more than 630 sessions and several hundred research abstracts and e-posters. All content is available virtually until October 31.

Awards

Robert W. Kirk Award for Professional Excellence

Dr. Joan R. Coates

Dr. Joan R. Coates (Missouri '90), Columbia, Missouri, was honored for an outstanding career and a lifetime of contributions to the college and to veterinary internal medicine. A diplomate of the ACVIM in neurology, Dr. Coates is a professor of neurology and neurosurgery at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, where she also directs the comparative neurology program and co-directs the neurology and neurosurgery service. She is known for her research in veterinary neurologic disorders, particularly in the study of canine degenerative myelopathy as a disease model for translation of therapeutic strategies to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Lee and Inge Pyle Service Award

Dr. Wendy A. Ware

Dr. Wendy A. Ware (Ohio State '82), Ormond Beach, Florida, for dedicated service to the ACVIM in a volunteer capacity. A diplomate of the ACVIM in cardiology, Dr. Ware is a professor emeritus at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she was the only cardiologist for several years. She has served as president and chair of the ACVIM board of regents and as a member of several of the specialty college's committees and task forces.

William R. Fenner Early Career Award for Outstanding Service

Dr. Raelene M. Wouda

Dr. Raelene M. Wouda, Graceville, Australia, for exceptional service to the ACVIM in a volunteer capacity within the first 10 years following board certification. A 2003 veterinary graduate of the University of Queensland in Australia and a diplomate of the ACVIM in oncology, Dr. Wouda is a veterinary oncologist at Veterinary Specialist Services of Queensland. She has served on several ACVIM committees and as the first certification liaison, appointed by the specialty college's board of directors.

Specialty Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. Warwick M. "Waz" Bayly

Dr. Warwick M. "Waz" Bayly, Pullman, Washington, for contributions and leadership in the specialty of large animal internal medicine. A 1974 veterinary graduate of the University of Melbourne in Australia and a diplomate of the ACVIM in large animal internal medicine, Dr. Bayly is a professor of equine medicine at Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where he served as dean from 2001-08. He is known for his work in equine exercise physiology and is co-editor of the textbook "Reed, Bayly, and Sellon's Equine Internal Medicine."
