SAN FRANCISCO - November 3, 2025 - The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) announced it is offering a free commute option to essential federal workers affected by the government shutdown. Under the program, eligible federal employees can get a free monthly pass on the Airport's GO>SFO Shuttle, a commuter bus program available for all workers at SFO.
"We continue to seek out meaningful ways to support our essential federal workers during this extended government shutdown," said Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet. "By offering a free commute option, we hope to help relieve some of the financial impacts these employees are experiencing. We are truly grateful for their resilience, dedication and service."
Launched in 2022, the GO>SFO Shuttle operates four routes serving Hayward/Castro Valley, Vallejo/El Cerrito, Oakland, and Mission/Balboa Park in San Francisco. Employees can purchase a single-ride pass for $6, a 10-ride pass for $50, or a monthly unlimited rides pass for $190. The relief program for essential federal workers at SFO waives these fees and would also refund passes already purchased.
In addition to the free commute option, SFO has also encouraged Airport concessions to offer federal workers a 50% discount on food and beverage purchases. To date, 82% of SFO operators have elected to participate. SFO is also offering financial counseling resources to affected federal workers.
SFO is committed to providing an extraordinary airport experience, with seamless access, thoughtful amenities, sustainable design and inspiring artwork and exhibits.
