Fort Pulaski National Monument Welcomes James Crutchfield as Superintendent

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The National Park Service has selected James Crutchfield as the new superintendent of Fort Pulaski National Monument. Crutchfield has more than 15 years of leadership and operational experience with the NPS and began his official role on Aug. 23.

"I am honored to serve as the next Superintendent of Fort Pulaski National Monument and appreciate the confidence the National Park Service has placed in me," said Superintendent James Crutchfield. "I look forward to joining the Fort Pulaski team and working alongside our employees, partners, volunteers and community to preserve this extraordinary place for future generations."

Most recently, Crutchfield served as park manager of Dry Tortugas National Park in Florida, where he led park operations at one of the nation's most remote and logistically complex national parks. During his tenure, he oversaw major infrastructure investments, marine operations, facility management, emergency response and interdisciplinary teams to protect nationally significant natural and cultural resources.

Before that, Crutchfield led preservation projects for the NPS Historic Preservation Training Center at nationally significant historic sites across the country. His career also included a decade at Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, where he advanced through positions as a park mason, maintenance supervisor, project manager, and facility manager. While at Castillo, he developed extensive experience in historic preservation, asset management, construction management and park operations.

Prior to his NPS work, Crutchfield served in the Florida Army National Guard. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Family, Child and Consumer Sciences, bringing a people-centered approach to leadership, team development and public service.

Fort Pulaski preserves one of the nation's finest examples of a Third System masonry fortification and tells nationally important stories of military history, engineering, emancipation and coastal resilience. As superintendent, Crutchfield will lead the preservation and management of Fort Pulaski National Monument while providing exceptional visitor experiences.
