Union Pacific Supports Community First Responders Through Rail Safety Training

After delivering a record year in safety performance, Union Pacific continues investing in the people who help protect communities every day.

First responders are central to that mission, and the railroad trains nearly 6,000 police officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel each year to bolster emergency readiness across its 23-state network.

Through programs like Operation Lifesaver Railroad Investigation and Safety Course (RISC), participants gain real-world experience that helps them respond confidently and keep their communities safe.

"These classes help them understand what to do and who to call when an incident occurs on or near the tracks," said Buck Russel II, senior supervisor-Public Safety. "We want to establish a core group of first responders who are experts on rail safety and operations."

Union Pacific works alongside local departments to deliver real-world instruction focused on rail operations, hazardous materials and coordination near active tracks and railroad crossings.

Recent engagement includes a three-day Tank Car Safety and Rail Emergency Response course in Northlake, Illinois, where 25 firefighters from across the Chicago area received hazmat technician-level training from hazardous materials safety instructors. The course focused on tank car identification, interpreting train lists and critical response techniques designed to support safe, efficient response during rail-related emergencies.

In Pine Bluff, Arkansas, four courses over two days brought together local police officers, firefighters and state troopers for training on railroad coordination and staying vigilant near highway-rail grade crossings.

"These courses do more than provide education and experience," said Matthew Thompson, senior manager- Hazardous Materials. "They build relationships with our community partners, and that's important for a safe, efficient response."

Explore how Union Pacific advances safety across its network, including available training and resources for first responders, communities and customers, and see the railroad's historic year driven by best full-year safety and service performance.
