Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown has ordered flags at all City facilities to be lowered to half-staff to coincide with Governor Bob Ferguson's directive that state and U.S. flags at all state agency facilities be lowered immediately to honor victims of political violence.

Flags at City facilities are at half-staff in memory of all victims of political violence, including Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were assassinated June 14, 2025, and Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated Sept. 10, 2025. We also honor Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who were seriously injured in an attempted assassination.

"Violence has no place in our democracy. Spokane sends it deepest sympathies to those impacted and joins the nation in mourning those who have lost their lives in these senseless acts," said Brown.

Flags will remain lowered until sunset, Sunday, Sept. 14. We encourage anyone with a flag outside their home or business to join us in honoring those who lost their lives to political violence.
